EMERGENCY APPEAL FROM CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPEAN NETWORKS FOR THE EUROPEAN SOCIAL FORUM 2010

Inspired by the World Social Forum, the European Social Forum since its beginning in Florence 2002 has motivated the gathering of many political, cultural and social initiatives in the Central and Eastern Europe. It has been the starting point for the demonstrations against the Iraq War, the campaigns against the EU directive to promote privatisation of public Services and strengthened popular movements of cooperation in Europe for climate justice, food sovereignty and against the privatization of water.

But there are big problems now. Two weeks before the beginning of the ESF many friends from Hungary, Czech Republic, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Moldavia, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia etc. (who recently founded an All European Network against right wing extremism during a conference in Prague at the end of March, 2010) have been told by the Turkish organizers that they could not guarantee even a minimum support (of aprox. of 10 000.- Euros) for the travel expenses of Eastern and Central Europeans to Istanbul from registration fees, because they would not know which other expenses have to be covered from the Solidarity Fund. If this decision gets confirmed in a meeting of the Turkish Organizing Committee next Monday this would mean that for the first time in the history of the ESF many people from Eastern and Central European countries who were planning to come to Istanbul would have to stay at home.

We appeal therefore to our friends in Western Europe

 1) to send as much money as they can to support the Central and Eastern European participation at the ESF in Istanbul. All resources, small or big are welcome and should be transferred to the following account:

> >> Duha UNITED
> >> Prague - Czech Republic
> >> IBAN: CZ59 5500 0000 0050 8212 5001
> >> BIC: RZBCCZPP
> >> In case that this is not possible for technical reasons we kindly ask the sponsoring individuals and organisations to tell us how much they could contribute upon their arrival in Istanbul.
> >>
> >> 2) to write to the Turkish Organising Committee (TOC) and ask them to reconsider its decision not to guarantee any amount from the Solidarity Fund to support the travel expenses of Central and Eastern Europeans to Istanbul.
> >>
> >> In hope for a common All-European cooperation for peace, social justice and the saving of our environment,
> >>
> >> in solidarity yours.
