Dear Matyas, dear friends,
there are of course many interesting thoughts
in that study (below), and all of us deeply sympathize
with the example of misguided reformism that
was made of Eastern Europe -- by the way, Ireland
is now in the same hell -- but one thing is for
certain is that Ms. Szalai does not speak from
the experience of the new underclass.
If she did, she would know that the notion
of consumption being created by advertising
etc. is already outdated and misleading.
The new elite clearly abuses its wealth, while the
demand of the underclass, also in the West, is
simply rudely suppressed. You can either
heat your place, or eat, and luxury goods
such as health, transport, or culture are
almost without reach. Even participation
in the internet are threatened by new
developments such as fraudulent providers,
phishing, virus attacks, and in any event, privacy is
not guaranteed.
Rifkin's notion of refeudalization that she
mentions at the end is much more apt and
deserves elaboration! I know that within Attac
Germany some friends are researching along
these lines.
Best Christmas wishes from IMF-administered
Ireland

>
> The main statement of the study is that new capitalism of East Europe is
> experiencing a deep crisis as a system, and in light of this the system
> change which started twenty years earlier has in essence collapsed. The
> study decisively shows and characterizes the path leading to the collapse,
> the main stages and junctions. All this is presented in light of the global
> context, as the history of Eastern Europe can only be understood,
> especially in the age of globalization, in light of developments in international
> relations.
