4b. 4 000 in anti WTO demonstration in Geneva November 28
Up to 4000 people joined march November 28 today in Geneva protesting ahead
of the WTO meeting in an International Demonstration as part of a week of
action and debate around the WTO Ministerial which runs from 30th November
to 2nd December.
The mobilisation was seen very much in relation to the COP15 UN climate
conference taking place in Copenhagen 7th - 18th December - Economic Crisis=
,
Climate Crisis, Social Crisis: It=B9s Time to Change Course! (see
http://www.anti-omc2009.org/spip.php?article8).
Indymedia reports in German states that activists without any provocation
from the police broke out of the demonstration from the very start and
smashed cars and windows and then came back. At the beginning targeted
against banks but soon against anything, a bijouterie and other shops, many
cars and bikes, a bus stop. When at least four cars also was set on fire th=
e
police attacked trying to separate demonstrators from people causing
property damage. ... Read more at blogpost including

4c. 40 000 in Stop the Climate Chaos demonstration in London December 5
40,000 Climate Change Protesters took to the streets in the Climate Chaos
marching through central London on Saturday, encircling the Houses of
Parliament in a human wave of blue-clad demonstrators. Police reported
20,000 people joined the march. Organizers put the turnout at 40,000. The
coalition organizing the march includes groups such as Oxfam, Greenpeace,
Friends of the Earth and the WWF. They called the protest =B3The Wave,=B2 and
organizers asked marchers to dress in blue. Oxfam was quoted in the news
stating =B3The U.K. government must fight for a comprehensive, fair and
binding deal at Copenhagen =AD that is our demand today and we expect it to b=
e
fulfilled,=B2 Oxfam GB chief executive Barbara Stocking said in a statement.
=B3They must return home with a strong, effective climate deal both for our
own sakes in the U.K. and for the millions of poor people already suffering
from the effects of climate change around the world.=B2
5. The Danish letter that saved us from a split
In the end of October the chair persons of Living Sea, Free Farmers member
of Via Campesina Denmark, and of Construction Workers Union disseminated an
open letter opposing the December 16 Push for Climate Justice action
organized by CJA and CJN as it was presented at press conferences and at th=
e
CJA web site. The title was Civil disobedience or naive activism. The open
letter defended civil disobedience as a weapon of popular movements
throughout history. "The strike and the blockade are rooted in civil
disobedience."But the letter also claimed "In our view, this experience
speaks clearly against using civil disobedience against legitimate politica=
l
gatherings.=20

7. The new media-hype: The Never trust a COP
For many months there has been a media hype about violence and the Reclaim
power action on December 16 organized by Climate Justice Action. A week ago
the focus suddenly shifted towards Never trust the COP instead and December
12. =20
How to respond to this media hype about the possibility of activists using
the occasion including being part of demonstrations or mass action and then
break out them to make property damage often impossible to see the politica=
l
message in for people in common? At the demonstration in Geneva against WTO
this kind of tactics causing criticism also from Southern WTO opponents.
The international idea to abstain from commenting other tactics have been
the rule so far and has many advantages. But this does not work well in
Scandinavian political culture.

8. A dynamic Via Campesina in the key position
Sitting representing the strongest present global mass movement at the pres=
s
conference ending the Climate Justice Action meeting in October were two
women from Via Campesina. It is no coincidence. Peasants all over the world
are the most effected by the proposals for solutions from the rich countrie=
s
promoted at COP15. Female Via Campesina activists are often in the forefron=
t
of the struggle. A global emission trading market would open an avenue for
massive land grabbing risking the livelihoods of millions and millions of
peasants. As almost no other organisation promote the values of popular
movement mobilisation globally through non-violent action.
Contrary to many organisations Via Campesina is a mass organisation in most
countries although very small in Denmark and Sweden. As there has been
criticism as expressed in the letter about the Reclaim power - Push for
climate justice action December 16 by the chairman of Frie B=F8nder which is =
a
member of Via Campesina the situation is not easy. In spite of this Via
Campesina is clearly committed to make actions in Copenhagen and also
expressed themselves about the problems at the recent anti-WTO demonstratio=
n
in Geneva.=20

9. Friends of the Earth European Climate campaign meeting
A travel report from Czech republic by Tord Bj=F6rk
At the Moldau river South of Prague Friends of the Earth Europe made its
last meeting for climate campaigners before Copenhagen. A lot of groups fro=
m
all over Europe were present. For once funding had been able to carry out a
campaign through many years consistently called The Big Ask. The goal had
been to make governments to adopt a climate law thus contributing to the
international struggle to combat climate change.
To summarise the meeting it became clear that after Copenhagen more effort
would be put on the national and local level which suits FoE well as it is
based on national groups with local chapters in all countries. A change in
interest is also taking place towards focusing on climate justice rather
than mainly focusing on emission targets.

11. Repression.
11a. Police Tactics in Denmark COP 15
A very informative text about police tactics in Denmark have been published=
.
It is an informal text made by a few people in the Climate Collective. You
find it at:
http://de.indymedia.org/2009/12/267774.shtml
11b. Unsuccessful demonstration in Denmark
The fact that less than 200 persons participated in a demonstration against
the new law package now decided in parliament shows a clear weakness in the
capacity to respond to growing willingness to use repression against freedo=
m
of speech. That this unsuccessful demonstration not have been reported on
any of the the two most important mobilisation email lists used by Climate
Justice Now and Climate Justice Action is also worrisome. If we only report
on news that are positive we are in trouble not making it possible for
everyone to make there own assessment of the situation. The way the
government falsely have presented the law as necessary to be able to act
against violence when in fact it was only directed against by-standers that
passively by not moving not follow orders from the police, sit-down strikes=
,
pickets and the like. The way the media swallowed this false marketing show=
s
how established media in Denmark have merged with an oppressive state and
become an anti-democratic tool against the interest of freedom of speech.
Only in the UK has here been a really united strong protest against the new
Danish law package.
11c. Police in proactive operation hand-cuffing activists on false grounds
On the eve of the COP15 the police also showed how they are unpredictable
thus acting in a provocative way. CJA have had a dialogue with the police
about both the actions and sleeping quarters including a warehouse at
Teglholm close to the harbour.
Early December 4 the police invaded the warehouse at Teglholm with sleeping
activists and hand-cuffed 15-20 persons for almost an hour. The claim was
that there was no contract for renting the building but this was false. CJA
spokespersons says that this incidence puts some doubts on the dialogue wit=
h
the police wondering if the police action was to provoke or lack of interna=
l
information.=20
The police spokesperson Flemming Steen Munch claims that police acted
lacking correct reasons and made an excuse. One could add that there were n=
o
reasons whatsoever for the kind of action that was made even if there were
no contract for the premises. The police operation was under all
circumstances provocative.

Introduction<BR>
<BR>
Conflicts between dualistic and consensus political cultures among actors i=
nitiating mass actions in Copenhagen have been sharp. But important steps ha=
ve now been taken in Denmark towards more fruitful relations. Meanwhile the =
confrontations in the official process gets more and more sharp. The prime m=
inister in Denmark sounds like a new Bob minister in Bagdad repeating his so=
und bite there will be a legally binding agreement. None else seems to care.=
But the last days a new tone is there. An non-binding agreement that is far=
from the historical binding agreement once stated as the only possible outc=
ome is now promoted by main actors as governments in rich countries, UN gene=
ral secretary and some new industrialised countries. A non-binding agreement=
against the interest of impoverished countries and far from solving the cli=
mate crisis even possibly bringing us on a wrong course. The Danish minister=
of Climate is enthusiastic about the decision by the US president to attend=
COP15 at the final negotiations in his attempt at steam rolling any hope fo=
r the binding agreement that once the Danish minister of climate claimed was=
the only option. In the world of spin doctors things move fast. You can fol=
low the official game in many newspapers. <BR>
<BR>
Lets take one of many out of the box, Berlingske, a leading conservative Da=
nish daily: Rhetorically acknowledge the gravity of the issue and maximum 2 =
degrees increase in temperature, long term goals for reducing emissions glob=
ally by half until 2050 including funds for the South and almost no goals fo=
r the coming decade, rather 5 percent decrease instead of the 20 to 40 perce=
nt which UN scientists at least have been aiming at. No immediate specific t=
argets for countries, no sanctions for not following an agreement, no specif=
ic resources for Southern countries. The last point one could add that it wo=
uld be in accordance with media spin and oppressive negotiations to give som=
e money to some Southern countries in the last minute that are far from clos=
e to what is needed, just to be able to state there was a climate justice co=
mponent in the deal.<BR>
<BR>
In this number 4 of The Heat Is On you will instead of the official power r=
elations reporting get inside updates on the dynamics of the mass actions, t=
he development of the relationships between different movements and politica=
l parties in Denmark and internationally. Both concerning political content,=
the cultural spirit, repression and other aspects of interest for popular m=
ovements. There will also be some travel reports and impressions from Copenh=
agen just before the COP starts.<BR>
<BR>
For the official messages from mass activities and main actors you can find=
an updated overview with links on: <a href=3D"http://www.aktivism.info/social=
forumjourney/?page_id=3D511">http://www.aktivism.info/socialforumjourney/?page=

<BR>
For the best inside information, the best is always to get involved.<BR>
<BR>
<BR>
1. Four mass activities can create the most dynamic summit ever<BR>
<BR>
All four mass activities in Copenhagen have unique qualities and will toget=
her bring a dynamic momentum for building a movement of movements for climat=
e justice. With Danish separatism in organising the four manifestations and =
international unity in bringing them together an open space is in place for =
uniting action and discussions, celebrations and protest, committed strength=
and openness for broad participation, resistance and building of alternativ=
es. This gives the opportunity for both individuals and organizations to exp=
ress themselves and act according to the needs of the situation with climate=
justice values at the core of the open space.<BR>
<BR>
A demonstration with wider support than any environmental demonstration eve=
r from 60 countries with freedom of expression and a broad appeal. A gatheri=
ng of almost ten presidents at the same time from progressive governments in=
the South at the same time at a mass meeting in Europe for sustainable and =
alternatives. A Klimaforum A Reclaim power action uniting forces=
from the outside and the inside to establish an alternative to COP when off=
icial delegates walk out and join hands with everyone that wants to have a c=
limate justice now agenda and not an agenda in the interest of rich countrie=
s and corporations. A fifth mass activity might occur at the end of COP15.<B=
R>

ualities, the Danish and international organisations behind them and how the=
y all related to wider political cultural patterns and their background in t=
