[fse-esf] Solidarity with Murad Akincilar

Alessandro Pelizzari – whom many of you know – and who is now working for
the Swiss Trade Union UNIA – has kindly requested me to share this call for
solidarity with a Geneva based trade unionist who comes from Turkey and who
has been arrested end of September in Istanbul.

Le mercredi 30 septembre 2009, le syndicaliste d'Unia Genève et notre
collègue monsieur Murad Akincilar a été arrêté à Istanbul à son domicile par
des agents en civil. Son épouse a été témoin de son arrestation.

Aucun motif n’a été donné à son épouse et nos tentatives pour rentrer en
contact avec les autorités pénitentiaires sont restées vaines. Son avocate à
Istanbul a finalement pu s’entretenir avec son client après plus de 30
heures de détention. Monsieur Murad Akincilar n’a pas été autorisé à
contacter les siens. Après plus de 48 heures, son épouse a pu s’entretenir
pendant 10 minutes avec Murad. Nous sommes d’autant plus inquiets que son
épouse se trouve dans une situation périlleuse et le sort de notre collègue
pourrait avoir des conséquences tragiques sur la santé de sa famille.

Nous sommes convaincus de l’innocence totale de monsieur Murad Akincilar eu
égard de son respect pour les lois turques et pour son esprit civique. Nous
avons toujours apprécié son intégrité morale et son attachement à la
justice.

Les évolutions politiques de la Turquie durant ces dernières années donnent
un immense espoir à tous les démocrates et montrent un exemple pour toute la
région du Moyen-Orient. Il serait extrêmement dommageable pour la Turquie
d’entacher sa réputation par de tels procédés arbitraires.

Nous exigeons la libération immédiate et inconditionnelle de monsieur Murad
Akincilar. Murad doit bénéficier des droits élémentaires à savoir contact
avec sa famille et son avocate, connaître les charges retenues contre lui,
avoir des conditions de détention décentes conformément aux engagements
internationaux de la Turquie.

On Wednesday 30th September 2009, Geneva trade unionist and our colleague
Mr. Murad Akincilar was arrested in Istanbul at his home by officers in
civilian clothes. His wife witnessed his arrest.

No reason was given to his wife and our attempts to make contact with the
prison authorities were unsuccessful. We only know that a large police
station could give us some news. His lawyer in Istanbul could finally speak
with his client after 30 hours. Mr. Murad Akincilar was not allowed to
contact his family. His wife is allowed to visit him during 10 minutes. We
are particularly worried for his wife is and the situation of our colleague
could have tragic consequences on the health of the family.

We are convinced of the total innocence of Mr. Murad Akincilar given his
respect for the laws of Turkey and his civic spirit. We have always
appreciated his integrity and his moral commitment to justice.

The political developments in Turkey in recent years give great hope to all
democrats and is an example for the entire region of the Middle East. It
would be extremely damaging for Turkey to tarnish its reputation by such
arbitrary proceedings.

We demand the immediate and unconditional release of Mr. Murad Akincilar.
Murad must enjoy basic rights. He must have contact with his family and his
lawyer, he must know the charges against him and have decent conditions of
detention in accordance with international commitments of Turkey.

Ein Unia-Gewerkschafter und Menschenrechts-Aktivist wird willkürlich in der
Türkei festgehalten

Am Mittwoch, 30. September 2009 wurde der Genfer Unia-Gewerkschafter und
unser Kollege Murad Akincilar bei sich zuhause in Istanbul durch Zivilbeamte
verhaftet. Seine Ehefrau musste seiner Verhaftung zuschauen.
Der Frau gegenüber wurde kein Motiv für die Verhaftung geäussert und auch
unsere Versuche, mit den Strafbehörden in Kontakt zu treten, blieben
vergeblich. Wir wissen nur, dass ein grosser Polizeiposten uns Neuigkeiten
geben könnte. Murad Akincilars Anwalt in Istanbul konnte sich mit seinem
Klienten bisher nicht unterhalten und Murad Akincilar war es nicht erlaubt,
seine Angehörigen zu kontaktieren.

Wir sind umso mehr beunruhigt, da seine Frau schwanger ist und die Situation
unseres Kollegen tragische Konsequenzen haben könnte für den
gesundheitlichen Zustand der Familienmitglieder.

Wir sind gänzlich überzeugt von der Unschuld von Murad Akincilar, denn er
respektiert die türkischen Gesetze und ist überzeugt von den Bürgerrechten.
Wir haben seine moralische Integrität und seinen Gerechtigkeitssinn immer
geschätzt.

Die politischen Entwicklungen in der Türkei in den letzten Jahren geben für
DemokratInnen Anlass zu grosser Hoffnung und sind vorbildlich für die ganze
Nahost-Region. Es wäre sehr schädlich für die Türkei, ihren Ruf durch dieses
willkürliche Vorgehen zu beschmutzen.

Wir fordern die unmittelbare und bedingungslose Freilassung von Herrn Murad
Akincilar. Murad muss von seinen Grundrechten Gebrauch machen können und die
Möglichkeit haben, mit seiner Familie und seinem Anwalt in Kontakt zu
treten, die Vorwürfe gegen ihn zu kennen und würdige Haftbedingungen zu
haben, die der internationalen Verpflichtung der Türkei entsprechen.
