A new network called "Librarians for informational commons and another
Europe" has registered its participation in the Malmö ESF. The network
presently links individuals and groups of library and information
professionals from Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden
and the UK. Among the collaborating organisations are BiS
(http://www.foreningenbis.org), Campagna europea contro il prestito a
pagamento in biblioteca (http://www.nopago.org/), The Swedish Labour
Movement Archives and Library (http://arbark.se/), Världsbiblioteket
(http://www.solidaritetshuset.nu/cgi-bin/solhus.cgi?d=s&w=107) and the
Network Institute for Global Democratization NIGD
(http://www.nigd.org/libraries).
We wish to widen the network during the months before the ESF. Receivers
of this message in, for instance, Central and Eastern Europe, Russia,
Ukraina and Belorussia are kindly requested to pass it on to librarians in
their environment. Please find contact details at the end of this
message:
Preliminary description of the network:
This is an emerging network of librarians for informational commons over
Europe North, South, East and West. A first meeting, with participants
from Finland, Italy, Norway and Sweden was held in Stockholm in September,
2007. The network wants to create links between the social forum and the
library community, and to contribute to the documentation of social forums
in public libraries.
The network has registered an an ESF Activity Proposal under the title:
The Library Strikes Back (Yes, The Library Can Still Help You To...)
This will be a workshop in two parts: 1) A session on the Public Lending
Right Directive of the European Union; 2) A session on the role of the
library in the construction of informational commons and another Europe.
Exact date, venue, speakers etc. of the workshop are still to be decided.
