Proposed ESF seminars

Below you find the list of proposed activities at ESF. I have tried to go
through tem primarily to see which ones were proposed from CEE couintries,
but also to see which were of transversal caracter.

As it takes time to open all proposals I have made a list below including
some detailed information about a selected number of proposals, mainly
describing the content more and what organisation is the main organiser.
Sometimes i add the webb national identity domain to informa about what
country the organisation comes from.

Apart from CEE contributions and transversals i have made a biased selection
with more details in certain areas out of interest for organisations like
Network Instute for Global Democracy focusing on scientific issues and the
social forum process and some democratic and environemtnal issues were many
seem to be interested (or at least myself). In general the proposals aks for
cooperation partners. For more detailed information, look at
www.esf2008.org, Sometimes there has been double submissions.

I hope this can inspire more organisations to submit proposals.

Participatory democracy –time for new constitutions

Abstract of program activity.:
With globalized neoliberalism the liberal democracy has come to ends way.
Deformed by the transnational corporations the dominant system can not
deliver even the most fundamental prerequisites for dignified life, nor in
the imperialist centers nor in the peripheries. Especially in the third
world peoples majorities are fed up with empty promises and organize to take
back the concept of democracy, fill it with its original meaning, people’s
power. Movements of women, of indigenous people, of the landless, jobless,
roofless arise to work for social, economic change and sustainable
development. Our conference aims to connect experiences and to exchange
knowledge about the different forms of particiaptory people's power that
have emerged in the third world. What can we learn from the processes for
new constitutions for participatory democracy in Latin Ameria?

Is development aid an imperialist tool? Many of the organisations
participating at the ESF, inclusive the Left International Forum, work with
development aid projects in countries in the South or East. Most of us
receive funds from our governments. But aid conditionality affects the
receiving countries directly or indirectly in areas such as economic
politics, the political system and the focus of civil society organisations.
What is an appropriate strategy and position of progressive organisations in
Europe toward development aid? Is the development aid today an imperialist
tool? Is it possible to transform it into a tool for the liberation of poor
people and countries and how can that be done? These are questions we would
like to discuss with European organisations, as well as with the guests and
participants from aid receiving countries.

Fight against climate change and energy poverty on a local level by
self-organisations supported by social movements

In the fight against mounting energy costs and under the threat of a warming
climate, civilians organize themselves in groups to look for sollutions that
can answer the challenge to reduce their energy consumption. Social
organizations assist and support them. In many European countries people own
the house they live in. Those owners feel the need to invest in their house,
even those who have a modest or moderate income. Many lack the knowhow and
the financial means. They stand alone in their search for cheap(er) energy
on a free market, and they don't have enough knowledge of this complicated
matter, e.g. the processes behind tariffs and the laws and regulations
concerning contracts. Collective action is the best approach: Social
movements have developed methods to combine these actions with community
building. Some of these methods use the internet. This approach has the
additional advantage of generating political power that in it's turn can be
used to force the authorities to take consequent action. In the Belgian
province of Limburg, citizens organize collective purchases of energy (gas,
oil fuel and electricity), of materials and equipment to make their houses
cold-resistant and of alternative energysources (mainly solar panels). They
are supported by ACW, a social organization. Actions taken: Raising public
awareness and consiousness by means of actions, media releases and meetings.
Organizing energy scans and audits of private houses. Actions aimed at lower
prices: collective purchase of oil fuel (30,000 families involved)
collective purchase of gas (15,000 families involved) collective purchase of
electricity (15,000 families involved) Actions to facilitate investments:
collective purchase of isolation materials (130,000 m² in 5 months)
do-it-yourself construction of solar boilers (1,000 families involved)
collective purchase of solar panels (500 families involved) These
investments are further facilitated by offering low-priced loans. 'Climate
quarters' come into existance. Groups of people living in the same quarter
save energy by changing their behaviour. Political action to obtain bonuses
or grants for investors and people who participate in collecive purchases.

  The Vision for Europé

Abstract of program activity.:
Presenting and discussing an alternative to the present EU. The EU - as it
is - is dysfunctional in its open disregard for democratic principles. In
the vision we propose a free political cooperation in the form of a
confederacy. The quality of life is the top priority, in contrast with the
EU perspective of becoming a world power. According to the vision all power
emanates from the citizen. Therefore the vision deals also with a
development of democracy with citizens participation, responsibility and the
right of initiative.

  Popular Education for Empowerment

Education embedded in the struggle of popular movements is an important tool
for social change as it contributes to empowerment and the development of
the political and social movements involved. The workshop will focus on
experiences and visions from the field of participatory popular and adult
education, and aims to promote the constitution of a European network of
progressive popular and adult educators. We want to find examples of good
practice in order to exchange knowledge and experience and underscore the
importance of participatory and dynamic education as a tool for global
change. the workshop is even aimed to be a starting point for the
development of an European network of progressive popular and adult
education agents.

Can the national element play a progressive role in the fight against
neoliberalism?

For the freedom of Peoples’ and the National Minorities Rights? (HSF-SR).
The problem is particularly important for Eastern Europe, but not only. We
consider, that the pure negation of the national element, and its
dissolution in the "individual freedoms" as well in the "europeans freedoms"
is breaking the struggle against the oppression and the "colonisation" of
the stateless peoples and the european national minorities. We propose to
put in focus the Rights to Freedom, to the national identity and the right

Representation of the Social Diversity in the Institutions

The idea is to debate about the current reality in our institutions. Is the
social diversity properly reflected into the decision-making or conversely
the decisions are ruled by a concrete social niche? Are thus different
perspectives from different social groups taken into account? The idea is to
discuss on how ensure a fair representation of young people, women,

Work homicides, worker struggles and the experience of Tuzla dockyards
strike

Tuzla dockyards are a symbol of brutal capitalist exploitation in Turkey.
Since the year 2000, totally 83 workers had died because of the so-called
'work accidents'. Since those 'accidents' were surely preventable, but were
consequences of the vile exploitation, we name them as 'work homicides'. The
anger of the workers and the demand to secure work resulted in our
historical strike of 27-28th of February. This was a de facto strike which
stopped the production in the Tuzla dockyards area and the dockyards sector.
With this seminar we want to transfer this experience and discuss about the
possibilities of common struggle.

S2B / Trading Away the Climate – How is Trade Liberalisation Aggravating
Global Warming

Climate change is the greatest threat our world faces. In December 2007,
Trade ministers have met in the sidelines of the UNFCCC COP/MOP in Bali to
discuss the contribution of trade rules and agreements to climate change.
The discussion was focussed on the positive side of trade liberalisation,
without looking at the possible conflicts or contradictions between the
trade and climate agendas. Justifying business-as-usual seems to be the
principal concern of most trade policy-makers at the moment, who fear that
the climate negotiations might bring about new burdens onto economic
operators. This workshop will address some of the main issues that arise in
the climate and trade nexus such as: the real impact of trade liberalisation
in green technologies the impact of intellectual property rights on
technology transfer of green technologies the role of offsetting border
measures that address international competitiveness concerns (“carbon
tariff”) the “waste economy” model, environmentally-wasteful and redundant
trade

ruling elite in the European Union is working hard to push through the
Reform Treaty. There are many campaigns in Europe against the treaty because
it means more war, more social cuts and less democracy in Europe. But what
are our alternatives? Should we go back to the national state? Shall we try
to reform the EU? Or should we be fighting for a socialist Europe?

  Defending our homes and neighbourhoods

Housing for working class people is under attack. Public owned estates are
being privatised and the rights and conditions for ordinary people
threatend. In Stockholm we defend the working class suburb Husby against
privatisation, shock rent increases and demolition of peoples homes. How can
the attacks be stopped? And what is our alternative in developing working

The climate crisis affects everyone. Even amongs big business and right wing

  Student stuggle and student organization

Across Europe - and the world - students are taking an active part in the
struggle for social justice and equality and the right to education for all.
2008 marks the 40th aniversity of the 1968 student protest across Europe.
Today we are witnessing another wave of student protests as attacs from
capital interets against the so called 'welfare state' and the higher
education. What has happened in the 40 years since '68?, and, more
importantly, what type of student struggle and student organization are
taking form today and in the future? What are the stuggles we have ahead of
us? How can we work together in these struggles?
