SOLIDARITY STATEMENT OF ATTACs PARTICIPATING IN EUROPEAN SUMMER UNIVERSITY (ESU) 2008

IN SAARBRÜCKEN

Hungary's democracy is threatened by the growth of extreme-right wing forces resembling the old drastic remedies of racism, neofascism and anti-Semitism as cures for dismantling social systems. These worrying developments are typical not only for Central and Eastern European (CEE) region, but in Western Europe, too.

After the systemic change in Hungary the introduction of the neoliberal policies have plunged broad layers of the population into social misery. The most affected group is the Roma, who have become scapegoats of the majority. Hungary is now the most xenophobic country in CEE. Paramilitary organisations, mainly the Hungarian Guard and neo-Nazis using Nazi symbols are supported by the parliamentary right.

The Roma face deeply rooted discrimination in education and employment. According to the statistical survey of the most influential Hungarian antifascist organisation, Party of the Hungarian Minorities-Legal Aid Association of Hungarian National and Ethnic Minorities (MKP-EKE) at least 1.5 million Roma are living in social ghettoes and leading a hand to mouth existence.

In Western Europe similar processes are taking place. The migrants from the developing world are faced with more and more Islamo- and Romaphobia and anti-Semitism.

We, the Attac participants of ESU 2008 express our solidarity with all these discriminated groups and support the antifascist fight. We call other organisations to build broad alliances against the antidemocratic, antihuman, antisocial tendencies and practices of neofascism.

Saarbrücken, 6th August 2008.
