Having the Governement and the National Assembly not withdrawn the law opening the door to the liberalisation of the Social Insurance System in Hungary, the Hungarian civic organisations and trade unions have submitted on Thursday 10th of April to the National Committee for the Elections the dossier of signatures initiating a referendum for the abrogation of the law. About half a million of signatures have been convassed since the beginning of the year by the civic organisations, among them the Hungarian Social Forum-Social Roundtable. The so called â01Eleftwing HSFâ01D (Attac, Karl Marx Society, Hungarian Workers Party 2006, Civic Parliament and others) has rejected the referendum initiative and did not take part at it. The plan of the referendum initiators is to hold the referendum in autumn. This would be the second referendum in Hungary in one year against the social cuts in the public health system implemented by the ruling coalition of socialists and free democrats. The referendum on 9th March 2008 â013 as you know - has seen an extraordinary victory of the hungarian society against the neoliberal policy of the Gyurcsany government, and as consequence the ruling coalition has been obliged to withdraw the new system of healthcare fees and tuition fees introduced last year. A governmental crisis has blown up with the withdrawal from the coalition of the free democrats. Endre11th April 2008
