PRESS RELEASE
The organizations and the people within the Romanian
Social Forum process have been following with
increasing concern the mounting up of the Media
campaign and the official statements referring to
Romanian immigrants in Italy.
Presently there are more than half a million Romanians
living and working in Italy. In spite of some
unfortunate appearances, the vast majority of them are
honest and hard-working people who left their homeland
in search of the promised land of employment and
better wages. It is an acknowledged fact that many of
the Romanian migrants in Italy are skilled workers
experts in various fields of activity. They are
appreciated both by their employers and by the members
of the local communities they are living in. Last but
not least, most of these migrant workers intend to
return to their homes and families left behind in
Romania.
Albeit understandable to some extent, we consider that
the reactions of the Italian authorities, particularly
of the Mayor of the City of Rome, as well as of the
Italian Media to the recent infringements of the Law
by Romanian citizens have not been objective.
Extrapolating isolated cases of Law breaking may lead
not only to a misjudgment of the Romanian immigrants,
but it may also create an inappropriate political and
psycho-social precedent in Europe. The threats
targeting the Romanian migrant community in Italy on
Saturday 6th of October only prove that slumbering
Reason may beget monsters and lead to violence against
the innocent.
Working within the frame of the European Social Forum
process and trusting in a fundamental set of values
that includes the right to immigrate, the right to
work and the rights at work, the principle of free
circulation of persons, the freedom of settlement, and
the right of all people to be treated with no
discrimination, we hereby call for an objective,
lawful, and democratic treatment of the situation of
the Romanian migrant community in Italy.
