Huge demonstration – police brutality

On March 8 about 40.000 students and university professors demonstrated in
the streets of Athens. It was the biggest demonstration since the beginning
of the university movement.

When the students tried to break the police blockade, the riot police
attacked the demonstration with tear gas. Hundreds of students were
brutally bitten and 61 were arrested (they are going to trial on Monday).
Despite the police attack, the demonstration was not dispersed and for many
hours thousands of people were demonstrating and resisting to police.

Although the new neoliberal law was voted by the right-wing majority of the
Parliament, the movement doesn’t seem to go down. 291 university
departments are occupied (the occupations started on January 8) and the
university professors are on strike (the strike began on late January).
