UNANIMOUS REJECTION OF THE EXTRADITION SUIT OF JAVIED ASLAM

The Court of Appeal unanimously rejected today the request of the
Pakistani junta to deport Javied Aslam, president of the Pakistani
Community in Greece. It is a significant vindication of the movement
that
denounced the abductions of the Pakistanis and the effort to suppress
this
scandal, through the penalization of the Pakistani Community.
The penal process proved also the conspicuousness of the collaboration
between Voulgarakis and Polydoras, ministers of Public Order, and the
Pakistani Embassy, in the effort to cover up the abduction scandal and
silence Javied Aslam,
Among the witnesses for the defence were G.A.Mangakis, former
minister, G. Felonis, president of ΕΚΑ (Labour Center of Greece), Y.
Sifakakis,
(coordinator Συμμαχίας Σταματήστε τον Πόλεμο), PASOK Member of
Parliament Aris Moussionis, Alekos Alavanos, president of Synaspismos
(left wing
party) and St.Korakas from ΚΚΕ (Greek Communist Party). The trial
was monitored by observers of Amnesty International.
We thank the personalities from all over the world as well as from
Greece, who supported the solidarity campaign, the actors and
intellectuals, the trade unions, such as GSEE (General Confederation of
Greek
Workers)and EKA, Amnesty International, the thousands of students who,
as
of the resolutions of their general assemblies, issued support
declarations, standing by Javied's side, the Opposition parties, the MPs
of the
Left, and the thousands of fighters who participated in the solidarity
rallies of the Pakistani Community and the Stop the War Coalition.
The battle to reveal those guilty of the abductions lies still ahead,
through the process of the witnesses's testimonies. This is also part
of the battle for the immediate release of the two vice presidents of
the Pakistani Community who are in the hands of the Pakistani junta.
At the same time it is together we will conduct the even broader battle
to put an end to the wars of Bush and to the occupation of Iraq, whose
capping stone will be, on March 17th, fourth anniversary of the
proclamation of the war on Iraq, the Pan-Hellenic Antiwar Rally.
