Dear Friends of ESF,
I have been asked by some Friends to give my opinion about the political situation in Hungary. Does it really exist the fascist danger in Central Europe? â013 they have put the question to me. Let me take the opportunity to inform not only the questionings, but all of you of my opinion about:
The borning on 25th August of the far rightist â01EHungarian Guardâ01D composed by some hundred people, is a premonitory sign of pontential major dangers in case ultra liberal policy of social cuts of the ruling coalition of Socialists and Free Democrats will continue with the blessing of EU Commission and the European Central Bank. The coalition of interests between socialist government and transnational corporations have extremely grave consequences on the social cohesion of my country and it may produce farther elements of destabilization. Extreme Right in Hungary is still very weak and isolated. Whithout political presence at the National Assembly. Neverthless it can aquire more force by making tool of the discontentment of the Hungarian Society, because of the anti-social policy resulting from the mentioned coalition of interests. (With a population of 10 millions we have more than 3 million of people living under the levels of social minimum with 250 euros per month and per head. Purchasing power of wages has decreased by more than 10 pc in the last months, officially declared yearly inflation beeing 7,4 pc. At the same time food prices have increased once more by 20 pc in the last days of August. Mass lockouts are carried out in the public services of health, education, transports, because the privatisations and the market liberalisation. The rate of employment is of 54 pc. The Health Reform of the government has been accompanied by the exclusion de facto from the medical care of about 15-20 pc of the population, and an immediate boom of infantile mortality. The plan of partial privatisation (49 pc) of the Social Insurance system is puting in danger the health and the life expectances of millions of people unable to pay more for his health-care.) Cuts of the life conditions and the demolishment of the welfare system became every day phenomenon in Hungary, and they have conduced to increasing social tensions and fierce civic opposition. In order to control the situation and to justify its social model, Gyurcsány government is recuring now to the tactic to define â01Efascistâ01D all those who do not accept his neoliberal policy supported by EU. Governmentusing natioanl and ingernational press channels is confusing the borders between far right, and the overwhelming democratic majority of the people condamning the resurgent extreme right activity as well as the government policy. Socialists and free democrats are trying to convince people, there is no alternative to their coalition, but fascism. That is not true and absolutely unacceptable, because the mainpolitical forcein opposition, FIDESZ-MPP is not a fascist party, but democratic of the right.Instead of helping the building up of a large democratic front against the far right, by changing its own policy, the ruling coalition has choosen the way of conducing a histerical campaign against all those refusing his anti-social policydenominated â01EConvergency Programâ01D with EU. The Hungarian Social Forum Roundtable I am representing, has condemned the creation of the â01EHungarian Guardâ01D, at the same time we have also condamned the anti-social policy of the government bringing grist to far right mills. We make a clear distinction between fascists and democrats, among them conservative democrats and we seekalliances with them in anti-fascist sense. We invite people to democratic joining of forces to get out from this dangerous political and social crisis. We support the referendum against the privatisation of Social Insurance System and public health proposed by FIDESZ and some individuals. We mobilize people to demonstrate against the anti-social policy of Gyurcsány government. (A big social demonstration will take place in Budapest on 8th September.) We continue with our open orientationof social alliances for achieving concrete social goals with other forces not of left. As part, on 11 September we will organize a conference with the Hungarian Catholic Church Iustitia et Pax Committee by the title â01EFor a more just and fraternal Societyâ01D, making a common effort to show an other social-ethical order in front of the existing neoliberal one, and help to find the way out from the crisis. I think, in case this government will not change his policy, we should demand anticipated elections in Hungary, before the situation deteriorate and escape not only from under the control of this government, but also from under the control of the democratic forces in general.
31 August 2007
Friendly, Endre Simó
