Demonstrations and divisions in Hungary
4th November 2006, the 50th Anniversary of the suppression by the
soviet military forces of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 was
caracterised by the incapacity of the political forces represented int he
National Assembly to celebrate jointly, in the spirit of national unity.
While an official commemoration with the participation of the President
of the Republic, Sólyom, Prime Minister Gyurcsány and other authorities
in Heroes Square took place with the exclusion of the citizens, a big
peaceful torchlight demonstration with the slogan Justice makes free,
a clear reference to the policy of lies of hungarian PM, linked with the
liberty spirit of 56, has been organized by the rightwing party in
opposition of Young Democrats, Civic Party (FIDESZ) followed by 100-
120 thousand of people. Also some fascist groups have organized their
demonstration with racist, anti-semite slogans, but it remained very
isolated with no more than 200 participants. Majority of the Hungarians
continue asking the dismissal of the PM Gyurcsány and his government.
New demonstrations, among them of Trade Union of Public Employees
of Health (EDDSZ), co-operating in the frame of the Hungarian Social
Forum are in preparation. Starting from the rejection of the
privatisation of public health and assurance systems, EDDSZ is also
demanding the dismissal of the ruling coalition of socialists and free
democrats.
