*(en)* Dear Friends,

With a delay caused by technical difficulties (which we have to deal with)
and for which we beg your indulgence, we want to make a point of expressing
our strong approval for the concerns expressed in Anastasia Lampropoulos'
message below.

Let us take this opportunity to insist once again on the need to recognise
how central language considerations are to the Social Forum process, and to
request that the forthcoming European Preparatory Assembly (EPA) take the
time to debate this rather seriously. This involves not only technical
questions (that should be resolved as well as possible whenever they arise),
but rather of more deep-seated political orientations.

One of the points we should ponder is the place we assign to English, given
that it is the instrument of an imperialism affecting more than just
language. If we are unable to use all the right languages (i.e. several
dozen for Europe), we should at least be careful not to privilege just one
of them, and especially not the one that is pre-eminently the language of
the "globalisation" which it is our intention to combat.

Our association is extremely glad that the improper remark against which it
protested – at the foot of each message, inviting us to use "English or two
European languages" – has disappeared. But that should not be replaced by
the constant use of English alone. That is why we reproach Anastasia
amicably (but firmly) for having sent her message in English alone, and Hugo
Braun for having done the same with the circulars announcing the EPA.

We propose the rule that *each person write in their own language* (or one
of their own languages) *and if possible in at least one other European
language*.

It will be possible to talk about this in person at Frankfurt, because our
association will be represented there (by François Simonnet, as at a number
of previous EPAs). However, we demand that this be put on the agenda of the
Assembly itself.

Best regards.

 *(eo)* Karaj amikoj!

Ne
temas nur pri demandoj tehhnikajn (kiajn oni devas lau-eble malplej malbone
respondi tiam, kiam oni ilin ekfrontas), sed pri profundaj politikaj
orientighoj.
kontraubatali,
Nia asocio ege ghojas, ke malaperis tiuj maldecaj vortoj, kontrau kiuj

Dear all,
During the organization of the 4th ESF in Athens, Babels assisted by ALIS
group strived to provide passive –at least- interpretation in more than 20
languages. This choice was not a luxury that the Greek Organizing Committee
could afford to offer to the participants. It was a conscious political
decision; both Babels-el and the Organizing Committee knew that not so many
languages were "strictly" needed for carrying out the 4 th ESF. However, at
the expense of organizing the EL booth in a better way, Babels-el and the
Organizing Committee decided that it was politically important to send the
participants the message that we are doing our best to make everyone's voice
heard.
I was extremely surprised to find out that our effort to break the barrier
of the widely spoken languages and to include Eastern European ones was not
noticed by anyone. In the first EPA for the 5 th ESF, there will be
interpretation only in English, French and German. There was not even a
thought or a discussion about including an Eastern European language such as
Polish.

Today I –I know it's a bit late but I lost track of the developments because
I faced health problems lately- read the message of Hugo Braun about the
topics that will be discussed in the EPA. The first topic is the evaluation
of the 4 th ESF and how we are going to proceed. However, so as to hold this
discussion and make the most of it, you should at least consider to provide
simultaneous interpretation from and into Greek since a number of Greeks are
going to travel to Frankfurt to talk about their experience and discuss
about the process. Some of them speak neither English nor French nor German
and others although might speak one of the above-mentioned languages, they
are anything but fluent.
Anastasia Lampropoulou
Babels-el
