[fse-esf] a call from the Kurdish Movement

There is a call from the Kurdish Movement in Turkey below. They want to
collect the signs of social movements and the people for the text below.

To the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Turkey,

 

Abdullah Demirbas, who is the Mayor of Diyarbakir Sur Municipality, is
firstly investigated by the Minstry of Internal Affairs of Turkey, then
sued, because of his speech in the European Preparatory Assembly of ESF in
Vienna about multiculturalism. The attorney general wants him prison from 1
year to 3 years because of his speech in the ESF meeting (5-8 January 2006).
The attorney general of Diyarbakir thinks that to support the
multiculturalism means to support PKK, and says that to defend
multiculturalism in Turkey is to make propaganda for PKK.

European Social Forum is a space for the dialogue of social movements. Free
speech is a fundamental point to create a place of discussion of social
movements. The Mayor of Sur municipality of Diyarbakir, Mr. Abdullah
Demirbas, basicly expressed his ideas in the ESF. The trial about his speech
shows the level of democracy in Turkey.

 

We as the people and the movements who signed this paper, want from the
Ministry of Internal Affairs of Turkey, 

- to stop investigating Mr. Abdullah Demirbas and to stop the case about
him, 

- to abolish the laws which limit the free speech in Turkey.
