Dear Piero,
Your Cobas seminar has not disappeared. It is in the list that
Yannis sent out, and I think it has been merged in the way you want,
so I did not write about changes to it. I wrote only about the
changes that I knew people wanted.
I am suggesting only three climate change seminars out of thirteen
on the environment. I think all topics in the environment are
important, but this is the most important problem we face. Also,
there were many more seminars proposed on climate change than on any other
topic.
There are two reasons for having seminars on climate and war, and on
climate, corporations and social justice. One is that we have said
many times in the esf environment network that we do not want a
ghetto for the environment, but want to be transversal and reach out
to other movements. The other reason is that we will have climate
demonstrations in many countries on Nov 4, and we want to involve as many
people as we can. For the sort of really big movement we need to force
governments to act, we will need to move out far beyond just green groups.
That is why our seminars are trying to involve unions (like cobas), peace
groups, development ngos, and social movements. The environment is not only
an issue for
environmentalists.
I hope this answers your question.
Jonathan

Dear all,
in fact more than "environment seminars" all this seems "climate
change
seminars". It is true, dear Jonathan, that "climate change" is a
very
important question but be careful not arrive to consider this "THE
QUESTION"
that summarize all the others. Otherwise, we could arrive to have
"The
climate change and the war", "The climate change and the
education", "The
climate change and the health", "The climate change and the sport",
"The
climate change in the cinema and in the arts" and so on. Anyway,
our Cobas
seminar in this list is disappeared. What about it, Jon?
Ciao, Piero Bernocchi Cobas

Subject: [fse-esf] environment seminars
Dear Yannis,
Thank you to the Greek committee for the work on the mergers. As
always, there are still some things that need a change. There is
room for this. We have been given 10 seminars in environment. In
Frankfurt we asked for 14 and were given 13. THE NUMBER OF
SEMINARS IS A
POLITICAL POINT - the environment has a much smaller space for
Athens than
in Paris and London. We do not want it to be even
smaller.
I think I speak for most of the organizations involved, but I
will
send this to the lists and to you, and if anyone disagrees,
please
reply to the list, me, and yannis, or just me and yannis.
ENERGY AND NUCLEAR POWER - At the Frankfurt meeting we agreed
that we
wanted
a separate meeting on nuclear power, because the issue is
so important. This means making two seminars from the one you
have
on energy 264-292-293-297-284. This is a political point.
So there would be two seminars here:
One is nuclear power. This is:
292 - legambiente - nuclear disasters
293 - campaign against climate change Istanbul - nuclear energy
284 - Athens ecological movement - from nuclear war (but maybe
this
goes with war, I am not sure, ask Wayne Hall)
Two is energy. This is:
264 - institute for globalization studies - alternative policies
in
energy
297 - synapsismos youth - power adequacy
281 - Turkish chambers - energy (This is now in climate change
seminars, but that is the wrong place. It is about energy.)
CLIMATE CHANGE - You now have two climate change seminars
One is 270,272,281,306,275, 272
Two is 274, 276, 279, 285.
I am not sure of the thinking behind the way they are merged.
What
we asked for in Frankfurt was three seminars_
Action
Climate change and war
Corporations, social justice and climate change (in
neoliberalism)
This would be
One - action:
270 - union of chambers Turkish - climate change
271 - greenpeace Greece - climate change and politics
275 - genoa 2001 - climate change
272 - campaign against climate change - global action
This merger is agreed by union of chambers, genoa, and campaign,
and
we all want greenpeace to be involved too.
Two - environment and social justice (this was going to be in
neoliberalism, but could also be in environment)
274 - campaign against climate change Britain - climate change,
corporate power and social justice
276 - anti imperialist component - climate change and social
disasters
279 - war on want - corporations and climate change
286 - elele action izmir - gold mining (this is now with COBAS
in
another seminar, but they say they want to be here. I am happy
with
either.)
273 - mediterranean sos network - climate change and climate
justice
(this is a workshop on your list.)
institute for globalization studies also has a seminar on
corporate
power and the environment that they want to merge here. This
merger
is agreed by the institute, the campaign, elele action and war
on
want. We have not spoken to anti imperialist component or the
sos
network,, but I see no problem if oen of them wants to merge.
Three - climate change and war
306 - campaign against climate change Istanbul - war, petroleum
and
climate change
272 - campaign against climate change Britain - climate change
and
war.
And maybe 284 - Athens ecological movement - from nuclear war to
climate as weapon (or maybe this goes with nuclear power
seminars -
ask Wayne Hall)
This merger is agreed by British and Turkish campaigns.
NOTE - I know it seems like three seminars on climate change is
a
lot. But one is on the environment and social justice, not only
climate change. Also, the two seminars on social justice and war
are
transversal, and could as easily be in mondialisation or guerre.
WATER - As you know, World Development Movement has moved their
278
- corporate takeover of water, to join another merger in
mondialisation.
DAMS - Here you have 263 - allianoi initiative of izmir on the
effect of dams. But there is also another seminar that I cannot
find
on this list now, from two municipalities in southeast Turkey,
on
the Ilusu dam. This should be merged here.
ASSEMBLY - 266 - campaign against climate change - assembly,
will
not be assembly of environmental and climate activists,
controlled
by many organizations, not only one.
WORKSHOPS -
273 sos network - climate change - should be with climate change
seminars, probably on environment and social justice
304 - friends of nature - sustainable tourism - this should be
agriculture with other seminars on sustainable tourism
