: [newprofile message:480] Two updates on imprisoned objectors|
עברית אחרי האנגלית
Dear Friends,
I'm forwarding two messages regarding imprisoned objectors in Israel in the recent days.
All the best,
Sergeiy Sandler - New Profile
1. From Yesh Gvul:
The Lebanon 2006 war has produced its first conscientious objectors. Yesh Gvul's Comment: There are already other refusers beside Itzik Shabat.
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/739959.html Lily Galili
Haaretz
The Lebanon 2006 war has produced its first conscientious objector - Staff Sergeant Itzik Shabbat, a 28-year-old TV producer. He refused to comply with an emergency order (Tsav 8) to report today for reserve duty in the territories in order to free forces in the standing army for the war in Lebanon.
Shabbat, a resident of Sderot, had not yet decided last night whether he would go to his reserve unit today and announce there that he was refusing to do reserve duty or whether he would not report at all and be considered absent.
"I know people will attack me and ask how could I not take part in this war when Qassams are falling on my hometown and Katyushas on the towns in the north," he told Haaretz. "In my opinion, only this type of opposition that I've chosen will put an end to the madness that is going on now and will shatter the false feeling that the entire home front supports this unnecessary war that is based on deceptive considerations."
He added: "Someone has to be the first to break the silence and it will be me. It is a shame that my order was signed by another Sderot resident, Defense Minister Amir Peretz."
Shabbat says he has already informed his commander and other officers in the unit of his intentions and he is prepared to pay the price.
In the past Shabbat, considered an outstanding commander, also refused to serve in the territories and sat in prison for 28 days. He was one of the signatories to the petition of the refusal movement, Courage to Refuse. However he says that his present decision is not connected with the need to relieve a unit in the territories but rather with his opposition to the war in Lebanon. The larger Yesh Gvul movement started by opposing the 1982 Lebanon war and only later the territories, too
2. Update on Conscientious Objector EYAD SIEF [Photo retirée]
On July 13, conscientious objector Eyad Sief (21), from Kfar Yanuch, was taken from his home, where he had been absent without leave for 20 days. He was taken to military prison #4 on 12 July and sentenced, on 13 July, for 35 days.
This is Eyad's second prison term. He already spent 70 days in military jail, after having been absent without leave for 46 days - he ended this earlier term on June 23, 2006.
Recommended Action
First of all, please circulate this message and the information contained in it as widely as possible, not only through e-mail, but also on websites, conventional media, by word of mouth, etc.
Other recommendations for action:
1. Sending Letters of Support
Please send the imprisoned objector letters of support (preferably postcards or by fax) to the prison :
Eyad Sief
Military ID 7406109
Military Prison #4
Military mail 02507
IDF
2. Letters to Authorities
It is recommended to send letters of protest on behalf of Eyad, preferably by fax, to:
Mr. Amir Peretz,
Minister of Defence,
Ministry of Defence,
37 Kaplan St.,
Tel-Aviv 61909,
Israel.
E-mail: sar at mod.gov.il or pniot at mod.gov.il
Fax: ++972-3-6976711
Copies can be sent to the commanders of the military prison
Another useful address for sending copies would be the Military Attorney General:
Avichai Mandelblit,
Chief Military Attorney
Military postal code 9605, IDF
Israel
Fax: ++972-3-569-43-70
It would be especially useful to send your appeals to the Commander of the Induction Base in Tel-HaShomer. It is this officer that ultimately decides whether an objector is to be exempted from military service or sent to another round in prison:
Amir Rogowski,
Commander of Induction Base,
Baqum, Tel-HaShomer
Military Postal Code 02718, IDF
Israel.
Fax: ++972-3-737-60-52
Copies of appeals can also be sent to:
Head of Incompatibles Unit
Induction Base (Baqum)
Tel-HaShomer
Military Postal Code 02718, IDF
Israel.
Fax: ++972-3-737-67-05.
For those of you who live outside Israel, it would be very effective to send protests to your local Israeli embassy. You can find the address of your local embassy on the web.
Here is a sample letter, which you can use, or better adapt, in sending appeals to authorities on the prisoners' behalf:
Dear Sir/Madam,
It has come to my attention that [name & military ID] , a conscientious objector, has been imprisoned [his/her] refusal to perform military service for the [n-th] time in a row , and is held in Military Prison No. [400/4/6] .
The imprisonment of conscientious objectors such as [name] is a violation of international law, of basic human rights and of plain morals. The repeated imprisonment of conscientious objectors is an especially grave offence, as it means sentencing a person more than once for the same offence, and has been judged by the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention to constitute a clear case arbitrary detention.
I therefore call for the immediate and unconditional release from prison of [name], without threat of further imprisonment in the future.
Sincerely,
3. Letters to media in Israel and in other countries
Writing op-ed pieces and letters to editors of media in Israel and other countries could also be quite useful in indirectly but powerfully pressuring the military authorities to let go of the objectors and in bringing their plight and their cause to public attention.
