[fse-esf] Democracy demands political parties' participation in the ESF, and openness about it

Dear friends,

from my experience political parties benefit a lot from their participation in the ESF. They start asking for things that the majority of people are demanding, they get a better understanding of the reality of society. On the other hand, the movement also benefits because their demands can be put to governments and parliaments and some of them are achieved through these means. In any case, if a political party wants to "manipulate" the Social Forum in its country it can do so anyway by registering individual members and associations it controls. We cannot stop that.

In my view, political parties should be represented at the Fora but should not have the right to "direct" the movement in their own direction.
How can this be done? By giving them speaking rights at the Assemblies but not voting rights? It is one way.
Best regards
Katy Nicolatou
Member of the Greek Social Forum and of the political party SYNASPISMOS

Dear Friends,

Three things are obvious:

1. some persons and political organisations don't want any discussion of equal participants during the ESF and the Social Forum Process

2. an agreed democratic basis should vanish under the slogan of "democracy"

3. many people tolerate the permanent violation of democratic rules.

Everybody has to decide about his/her interest in a future of the Social Forum Process.

Ciao

Dear Friends,

"Standing at the same place without making any effort, is the best speed way of moving backwards while the world is changing speedly"...

The phase which The Social Forum process and practice have reached, shows us the different degree. The 'non-existence' of the political parties in the Social Forum processs is not an absolute event. The Charta of Porto Allegre is not God's saying. It can be changed by the activists with open and democratic way...

In solidarity...
