So, according to COBAS, would Italian troops go to a Darfur, or a Rwanda?

Dear all,
in fact, as you probably know, there is now a big split in the italian
anti-war movement about all these subjects. More or less, we can say that we
have three positions in the movement: a first part doesn't give to the
occupation of Afghanistan the same importance as the Iraqi's occupation; for
that, and to avoid to go against Prodi's government, this part didn't want
to organise anything when the government, during this summer, decided to
maintain the troops in Afghanistan (with the vote of DS, Margherita, Prc,
PdCI, Verdi ecc...); in the same time this part is for the italian trooops
on Lebanon. The second part is for the withdrawal from Afghanistan but not
from Lebanon. The third part, in which COBAS are, is for the end of all the
italian war's missions (Afghanistan, Lebanon, Kosovo ecc..). Now, as COBAS,
we are trying to produce an alliance between the organisations and the
networks which defend the second point of view and the others which defend
the third position, so that we can organise a big national demonstration at
least for the withdrawal of all the troops from Afghanistan. We want to
organise this demo in the second part of february, when the Prodi's
government will vote for the re-financing of all the missions. In any case,
as Cobas and others organisations, we'll organise this demo. For all these
reasons we didn't celebrate too much the withdrawal from Iraqi (also
Berlusconi had decided to withdraw the troops from Iraqi within the year
2006, so that they could engage more in Afghanistan as NATO troops). But we
will celebrate a lot when all the italian troops will be back home from all
the fronts of war.
In solidarity,
Piero Bernocchi COBAS

Dear Haris,
It is not petty politics to criticize a government, like Prondiâs
parti[pting actively in Bushâs war. There is no difference between war in
Iraq and Afghanistan. Both countries are under occupation and Bushâs
allies face mass popular resistance.
So antiwar movement will continue by demanding troops out now from
Afghanistan and also from Lebanon. A compromise on this issue is not a way
forward for the antiwar movement.
Fraternally,
Petros Constantinou
Nobody would disagree that the anti-war movement should campaign for
thewithdrawal of NATO forces from Afghanistan. However, if we
underestimatethe importance of Italyβâ¬â¢s withdrawal from Iraq (which
was a victorymainly of our Italian comrades) because of possible
disagreements withother policies of the Prodi government, we run the risk of
being accusedfor petty politics. Haris Golemis -----Original

Re: [fse-esf] Italian total withdrowal from Iraq Dear Simo, I think this is
much too simplistic a response, particularly after theNATO summit in Riga
one of whose main themes was an effort to strengthenthe Western occupation
of Afghanistan, in which Italy is participating. We have to remember that
Bush's 'long war' has several fronts, not justIraq. General Danatt, Chief of
the British General Staff, who wants towithdraw British troops from Iraq
does so partly because he wants tostrengthen the British military presence
in Iraq. We need a Europeananti-war movement more than ever to campaign, not
only against theoccupation of Iraq, but also for the withdrawal of NATO
fromAfghanistan. Best wishes,

Iraq Italy has withdrawn from Iraq all italian soldiers - I have
justreceived the broadcast information. It's a very important development.
Itreflects to me a fundamental changement in the international policy of
Romano Prodi's centre-left government vis a vis of Belusconi pro war line.
It shows that Bush war policy is more and more isolated also inside of the
NATO allied. At the same time it is a great success of the italian peace
movement and by it our commun success in the ESF. Greetings for our italian
Friends. Bravi! endre
