Dear Simo,
I think this is much too simplistic a response, particularly after the NATO summit in Riga one of whose main themes was an effort to strengthen the Western occupation of Afghanistan, in which Italy is participating. We have to remember that Bush's 'long war' has several fronts, not just Iraq. General Danatt, Chief of the British General Staff, who wants to withdraw British troops from Iraq does so partly because he wants to strengthen the British military presence in Iraq. We need a European anti-war movement more than ever to campaign, not only against the occupation of Iraq, but also for the withdrawal of NATO from Afghanistan.
Best wishes,
Alex Callinicos

Subject: [fse-esf] Italian total withdrowal from Iraq
Italy has withdrawn from Iraq all italian soldiers - I have just received
the broadcast information. It's a very important development. It reflects
to me a fundamental changement in the international policy of Romano
Prodi's centre-left government vis a vis of Belusconi pro war line. It
shows that Bush war policy is more and more isolated also inside of the
NATO allied. At the same time it is a great success of the italian peace
movement and by it our commun success in the ESF. Greetings for our
italian Friends. Bravi!
